On Housework and Creativity

“I’ve seen women insist on cleaning everything in the house before they could sit down to write… and you know it’s a funny thing about house cleaning… it never comes to an end. Perfect way to stop a woman. A woman must be careful to not allow over-responsibility (or over-respectabilty) to steal her necessary creative rests, riffs, and raptures. She simply must put her foot down and say no to half of what she believes she “should” be doing. Art is not meant to be created in stolen moments only.” ― Clarissa Pinkola Estés

This quote came up today in one of the Facebook Groups that I participate in and I just had to share it! It is such a lovely reminder to me and besides that, Clarissa Pinkola Estés is one of my favourite people on the whole planet. It is Clarissa that reminds me to tap into the wild part of myself and to come out of hiding. That it is okay to be raw, to be real and to be imperfect – actually, it is necessary.

Have you read her any of her work yet? A great book to start with is Women Who Run With the Wolves.
How is your creativity going?
Are you honouring that part of yourself and teaching your daughters to, too?

Housework never ever ends. Our creativity will one day though. I’d rather leave a sink full of dishes and a hundred crazy paintings I’m a’thinking!
